The objective for companies today is for new recruits to be operational quickly: this means quickly getting to grips with the tools, knowing the issues of the moment, but also getting to know you (your values, your daily life, your jargon…).

Why is onboarding so important today?

  • 54% of organisations with a formal onboarding process report increased productivity from new employees,
  • 50% of them experience better retention of these new employees,
  • 86% of new hires decide whether or not to stay with the company within 6 months of being hired (according to a study by SHRM Foundation).
  • 4% decide on the first day, 21% in the first week, and 32% in the first month

In concrete terms, the onboarding process includes:

  • administrative steps (employment contracts, internal policy, regulations, etc.),
  • the steps involved in taking up the post (missions, company expectations, etc.),
  • familiarisation with the company culture,
  • getting to know other employees, managers and the company’s management.

Many companies practising onboarding tend to neglect the last two stages, which are nevertheless crucial for feeling integrated and recognising oneself in the company culture.

For this, rather than making them read tons of texts that they will not retain, they need short, impactful, easy-to-remember content.
And that’s the advantage of an onboarding video: it is much better remembered than a text message (95% vs. 10%), and above all, it adapts to the new recruit’s schedule: the person can consult it whenever he or she wants, and even come back to it if necessary, because this video will be part of a sort of “toolbox” in an internal Drive.

In your onboarding video, present your company

Normally, if the person has applied for a job with you, they know you at least a little bit. But to be a successful employee, they need to know you well: your values, your history, the concept in detail, the problem you claim to solve. You need to create that sense of identification from the start, to make sure that all new people have the same level of knowledge, from the moment they arrive.

Think also of presenting the different teams, via an organisation chart with pictures, for example: the faces and first names will not be retained from the first day, but at least this video support will allow them at any time, and as they go along, to put faces to the names.

Encourage your managers to make a welcome speech in the onboarding video

Your new recruits want to know that the management is aware of their arrival and welcomes them as well. Managers should not remain locked up in their bubble, and not be concerned about the newcomers who are integrating their teams, and also contributing to the company’s influence. Having a manager address you on video, calling you by your first name, is always heartwarming.

This won’t be the most fun part of the onboarding video, but talking about the administration and policies

From day one, the new employee needs to know how to get his or her pass, company canteen card, email, tools (PC, telephone, etc.), passwords and IDs, etc…
Mobilising HR resources for a one-to-one meeting on these recurring, but nonetheless vital details can take a while, and your HR team is not necessarily available.

Moreover, the fact that the newcomer can refer to these videos at any time is very useful and reassuring for him/her.
The amount of administrative, legislative or regulatory processes that can be sensibly presented in explanatory videos is impressive: this includes safety procedures, CSR policy…

The onboarding video is also an opportunity to demonstrate your product or service

If you want your trainees to get to grips with what you are doing quickly, you have to show them how it works from the very first days. The onboarding phase can therefore include a training video. To be even more challenging, you can even add quizzes to this video, to make sure they have learned what they need to know.

This will definitely relax nervous new recruits.
